What the site covers
There is a calendar for each January from 2020 to 2040, a full-year calendar for each of those years, and monthly calendars with holidays and moon phases. PDF versions are on the printable calendars page. Reference pages cover January holidays in the US and other English-speaking countries, the January birthstone and flower, the full moon and US tax deadlines.
The 31 days of January section has a page for each date with its observances, historical events and famous birthdays.
How holiday dates are calculated
Holiday dates are calculated from the rules in law and official sources rather than copied from other lists. US federal holidays follow 5 U.S.C. 6103, which sets Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the third Monday in January. When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, most federal employees observe it on the Friday before; when it falls on a Sunday, they observe it on the Monday after, as the Office of Personnel Management describes.
UK bank holidays use substitute days: when January 1 falls on a weekend, the bank holiday moves to the following Monday, and Scotland has a second bank holiday on January 2. Holidays in Canada, Australia and New Zealand follow each government's own substitute-day rules. Rules can change by law or proclamation, so check the official source, such as OPM or GOV.UK, before relying on a date for pay or leave.
Moon phases and week numbers
Moon phase times are computed with the standard astronomical algorithms in Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms and are accurate to about a minute. Times are shown in US Eastern Time (EST, or EDT during daylight saving time) and in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The January full moon page lists the results for 2020 to 2040.
Week numbers follow ISO 8601: weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week that contains the year's first Thursday. Under that rule, January 1 to 3 can belong to the last week of the previous year.
Lunar New Year, history and birthdays
Lunar New Year dates come from published Chinese calendar tables. Historical events and birthdays on the day pages are limited to well-documented dates, and entries with disputed dates are left out.
Corrections policy
Corrections are welcome. Email [email protected] with the page address, what is wrong and a source, or see the contact page for details. Each report is checked against its source, and confirmed errors are fixed promptly.
How the site is built
Every page is static HTML generated in advance, with no sign-up and nothing to log in to. The PDF calendars are also generated in advance as static files and are free for personal, classroom and office use.
One small JavaScript file adds four features: the Sunday or Monday week-start toggle, saved in your browser's localStorage; a highlight on today's date and the current month; the live New Year countdown; and the print button. Visits are measured with Google Analytics, loaded through Google Tag Manager; the privacy policy explains what that collects and how to opt out.
